The California

An Introduction to the California

This pub was originally based at 12 Albert Road and was established before 1861. In the 20th century it had a distinctive art nouveau exterior. In 2006 the landlord (Eddie Muscat) was a boxing referee and the pub was decorated with an impressive display of boxing memorabilia. It closed in 2007 and was later demolished for development.

Artist Les Hunt painted the California, one of three local pubs he has chosen as views.
